Within our common ministry, some women and men are chosen for particular work as Ministers of the Word and Elders. In Ordination, we recognize these special ministries, remembering that our Lord Jesus said: “Whoever among you wants to be great must become the servant of all, and whoever wants to be first among you, must be a servant of all” (Matthew 20:26-27).

GET TO KNOW OUR CHURCH LEADERS

Jessica Brock is from Hanahan, South Carolina.  She graduated from Presbyterian College and then from St. Catherine University with M.Ed.  She is a Primary Montessori teacher at Hursey Montessori School in North Charleston.  She has two children, Clay and Lilly.  She joined Second Presbyterian Church in 2018.  She enjoys spending time with her children, baking, reading, crafting, and going to the beach.

Ken Carrington was born in Ann Arbor, MI, and has two sons, Tripp and Beckett. He is the sports announcer for the River Dogs and the College of Charleston. Ken is an Elder, teaches at SPK, and is Christian Education Director for Second Presbyterian. He plays the flute, bagpipes, piano, Irish whistle and loves sound design. His greatest joy is teaching the Children’s sermon. Ken is currently continuing his education and is a candidate for a Commissioned Pastor in the Presbyterian Church.

Kelsey Cochrane has been married to her husband Stuart for coming up on four years. She is a dental hygienist and an Air Force Reservist. In her spare time she loves going on walks with her boxer mix Bo, reading, and cooking. She and Stuart joined 2nd Presbyterian shortly after moving to Charleston from West Virginia and she really looks forward to serving the church.

Stuart Cochrane has been a member of Second Presbyterian since about two weeks before everything went virtual in 2020. He has been married to Kelsey since July 2017. He graduated NC State in 2014, has been a SSgt in USAF reserves for seven years, and has worked at JW Aluminum for four years. Stuart enjoys reading, working on airplanes, fishing, NC State sports, and spending time with friends and family.

Sue Henderson has been Director of the Second Presbyterian Kindergarten since 1977. She has served as an elder and as a deacon at Second and on the Christian Education Committee. She has been on the Boards of The Charleston Museum and Life Management. Sue is a graduate of The College of Charleston and has taught kindergarten for 35 years.

Sharon Hoffman, known for her rum cakes and fruit tarts, is also the “sticker lady” for SPK. Sharon and her husband Bob joined Second in 2010 following her retirement from the University of Georgia System as an academic administrator. Sharon chaired the Stewardship Committee, the Investment Committee, and served on the Finance Committee during her first years at Second. She assists with the Tag Sale and the Tea Room. Sharon is a volunteer in the community, serving on several boards and feeding the homeless through Next Steps.

Bill Holley is an attorney with a renewable energy company based out of AZ. He and his wife Erin joined Second in 2022. They live on James Island and have two children, Teagan and Finn. Bill likes hiking and spending time in the Smoky Mountains.

Carol Howe has been a member of Second since 1983. She previously served as an elder, a Sunday School teacher, Circle leader and Moderator of Presbyterian Women. Carol’s love of Second Presbyterian has been nurtured by the many long-term friendships and relationships established in worship and activities with other members. She and Jimmy adore their three-year-old grandson, George. Carol loves a good book, attempts at cooking, and other creative experiences.

Wendelin (Wendy) Jewell and her husband, Bill relocated to Summerville after 25 years in Louisville, KY raising their two daughters. Although she still works PRN in her previous career as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Brighton Park Emergency Department, the move allowed her to pursue some lifelong interests as well. She is trying to build a new career in Real Estate, while volunteering for the Low Country Marine Mammal Network on Kiawah Island and tutoring middle school students in math at Cane Bay. In her free time she enjoys walking and biking.

Brittany Cogdill is originally from Spartanburg, SC. She first started coming to Second Presbyterian in 2006, when she attended the College of Charleston and MUSC College of Pharmacy. After graduating residency in 2012, she was lucky enough to stay on at MUSC as a clinical pharmacist. Brittany officially joined the Second Presbyterian family in 2018 and has been part of the Young Adults Bible Study and Women’s Podcast Group. She lives in North Charleston with her daughters Ember and Madison. In her spare time, she loves reading, scrapbooking, live music, and going to hockey games.

Tim Killen and his wife Elizabeth were married in 2020 and joined Second Presbyterian the same year. He is an attorney, and prior to praticing law, he served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. He lives in Rockville with his wife and five children. Tim enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and Clemson football.

Jim Kimmett Is originally from Baltimore and moved to South Carolina in 2006 after a career with the US Air Force and then the NSA that led him around the world. He and his wife of 52 years, Kathryn, raised 6 children and were together 54 years before her death in 2008. Jim met Robbie Staubes in 2012 and became involved here at Second Pres as a consequence.

David B King was born and raised in Charleston, SC by his parents Samuel B King and Evelyn R King. He was baptized in Second Presbyterian Church September 13, 1964. Lifetime of memories of fond fellowship growing up in the church which was a central part of his family life. After schooling, he spent 20 plus years in the retail audio/video industry until his father passed away then cared for his mother until her passing. David now manage rental property and am enjoys his years with his wonderful wife, Carrie.

Cynthia Dabney LaRoche was born and raised in Camden and brought up in the First Baptist Church. She attended USC Columbia and graduated from Midlands Tech as a respiratory therapist in 1981 and was married a week later and married for 23 years. She joined Second Presbyterian when her daughter was married here. She was attracted to the friendliness and diversity of the congregation. Her job involves working mostly with chronically ill patients, as well as newborns. She is often in the position to witness and pray with patients. She loves her job and the chance God has given her to be a steward for His word.

Dawn McCready and her husband, Rob, joined Second Presbyterian in 2017. They moved to Charleston just before that from Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Dawn is active on the Property Committee and serves as co-chair of the Annual Church Tag Sale. She and Rob are responsible for the re-illuminated bell tower and stained glass in the sanctuary.

Lucie Medbery grew up in the Disciples of Christ Church (Texas). She and Chuck settled in Kansas City for more than 20 years and retired in 2015 to Charleston, Chuck's hometown. This is their “family church,” where their children were baptized and where their daughter got married. She is a retired teacher and has been involved in an outreach program with the Gibbes Museum of Art.

Brad Milner was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a graduate of University of Georgia, and lives on James Island. Brad’s children, Bradshaw and Buckley, went to SPK and he has served on Session, as chairman of the Grounds Committee and the Men's Society and is currently involved in the Men’s Bible Study.

Chris Olson and his wife Judy were active church members in Clemson until moving to Mount Pleasant in 2019 and joining Second Presbyterian in 2021 and have helped with VBS and the bell tower restoration. They have two adult children and three granddaughters and they found Second Presbyterian Church as a result of their son’s wedding in this church. Chris serves on the finance committee.

Judy Olson and her husband Chris were active members of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church until moving to Mount Pleasant in 2019. They joined as members of Second Presbyterian in 2021 and Judy helped with VBS and the bell tower restoration in 2022.

Felicia Sanders is a native of Charleston, is married, and has 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Felicia enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and caring for others. She is a faithful member of Second Presbyterian and gets great comfort from attending Bible study and working in the church. On June 17, 2015, Felicia was at Bible study along with 11 others, including her son Tywanza, Aunt Susie, and granddaughter. Tragically her son, aunt, and 7 others died. Since that fateful day, Felicia has been healing, caring for her granddaughter, and attending to speaking engagements related to the shooting at Emanuel.

Nicole Schuerman moved to Charleston in 2016, joined Second in 2017 and has since frequently served as our greeter on Sunday mornings. She grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Illinois and loves to travel and read.


Debbie Smith is a native of Charleston and is retired from MUSC. She has been a member of Second Presbyterian Church since 1985 and has served and volunteered in various ways throughout the years. She is an avid gardener, enjoys word games, playing in the bell choir, serves as co-chair of the Annual church Tag Sale, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Debbie has also volunteered her time in the community tutoring young children in reading. She lives on James Island with her husband of 50 years, Patterson and their two Chihuahuas. She has two grown children, Russell and Caroline.

Patterson Smith has been a member of Second Church for over 35 years. During that time, he has served as a Deacon, an Elder, and Chair of several committees. Currently, he co-chairs the Property Committee and serves as the Church Treasurer. Patterson and his wife, Debbie, are both active in church activities.

Melissa Yates is an attorney with K&L Gates in Charleston. Melissa and her husband Charlie live in the neighborhood and have been members of Second for the past three years. Melissa is also an active member of the Junior League of Charleston, the Charleston Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Association, Historic Charleston Foundation, the Preservation Society of Charleston, and Bridges of Hope.
