Our guest minister this Sunday is the Rev. Gale H. Cooper, who has preached at Second Presbyterian twice before—a couple of years ago, pre-Covid. She and her husband Elliott are the parents of Second Presbyterian member Cathy Lipp, whose family is James, her husband, and sons Elliott and Wyatt. Rev. Cooper is an Episcopal priest who was graduated by Union Theological Seminary (Presbyterian) and Virginia Theological Seminary (Episcopal) before serving parishes in Richmond and Charlotte. She and her husband live at Bishop Gadsden.

Our guest organist this week, Eric Pickford, is a rising senior organ major at the College of Charleston, where he studies with Dr. Julia Harlow.

NURSERY – The nursery is available again starting July 11, 2021 during worship from 10:15 until 11:45am, located at the end of the downstairs hallway of the education building. Children over the age of 3 are asked to wear a mask in both the service and the nursery. Tywanza Sanders

Tywanza Kibwe Diop Sanders was born in Charleston, the youngest child of Tyrone and Felicia Sanders. He was genuine, kind-hearted, ambitious, zealous, inspirational, exuberant, faith-filled and faithful. Prior to pursuing his bachelors degree Sanders worked various jobs, including lifeguard, retail salesman, and barber. While completing his business administration degree at Allen University, he began to experiment in various sectors of the arts. He was entrepreneurial, a poet, musician, trained barber, and a man of God.

On June 17, 2015, Tywanza Sanders was assassinated while attending bible study at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church. Sanders was one of 12 persons attending the weekly Wednesday night bible study at the church next door to Second Presbyterian when a gunman, who joined the bible study session, opened fire and killed nine of the parishioners. While Sanders only lived for 26 years, he had an extensive life. He always sought new opportunities and embraced new skill sets. Prior to his death, he had been accepted at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida to pursue a degree in Media and Communication, which he was slated to begin in the fall of 2015.

Sanders’ legacy lives on through his family and friends. The essence of his character was pure love and no one was ever a stranger to him. To commemorate Sanders’ commitment to people, the Race 4 Achievement organization renamed an academic scholarship in his honor. The Tywanza Sanders® Legacy Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors graduating in the state of South Carolina. His family has also instituted an annual celebration held around his birthday which memorializes his life and legacy.

July is Tywanza’s birthday month and we hope you will join us in honoring and celebrating his memory. We are excited for the Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation to be back to serving youth with an entrepreneurial spirit again this year at Camp Wanza. Tywanza’s birthday is July 23rd and we are looking forward to the 6th annual birthday celebration in honor and memory of Tywanza on July 24th, also hosted here at Second Presbyterian Church. Sign up now to join this year’s #Race 4 Wanza Doughnut Dash 5K on August 28th at 9am. You can support the Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation even from afar through donation or purchasing an item through their online store. Or better yet, buy this year’s “ENOUGH is enough!” T-shirt and wear it in solidarity at Tywanza’s annual birthday celebration.

A Tough Day at the Office

Sunday morning worship is livestreamed at 10:30 a.m. Watch here.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 4, 2021

Dear Friends in Christ –

I know we’ve all had days at the office or at school or just in general when, at the end of the day someone asks, “how was your day?” and the answer is, “tough!” It happens to everyone and it happened to Jesus. He’s been teaching, preaching, healing and he comes home to Nazareth. He’s in his ‘home church’. Everyone’s impressed, admiring, amazed even until… someone asks, “isn’t this Mary’s son?” Meaning, “you know, we don’t really know who his father is. Who does he think he is? Is this really who they’ve all been talking about?” It gets ugly quick. You can sense they want a miracle. I think we see Jesus on the defensive, taken aback. But the point is not the smallness of his neighbors or that he’s constrained and scripture says, unable to "do any deeds of power except to lay his hands on a few sick people and cure them.” Really? Our lesson is what happens next.

I know it’s a holiday. Don’t forget it’s a holy day as well. Be present here or online. Let's establish and reclaim community.

There's love to share – and joyful work to do!

“Religion Is What You Do, Not What You Believe” – Rabbi Harold Kushner

Sunday morning worship is livestreamed at 10:30 a.m. Watch here.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 27, 2021

2ndpc sermon series book1.png

Dear Friends in Christ –

I bet you’re like most of us who at some moment heard the phrase, “Do what I say, not what I do!” I’ve been aware of the phrase it seems most of my life. But, I’m not sure of the moment when I understood that it was absurd, crazy to think that anyone of an age of discernment would take seriously any directive to obey someone or something that came via lip service but wasn’t worth heeding themselves.

In Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life, Rabbi Kushner brings forward something that practitioners of religion are fed once we’re known or outed – “I’m spiritual  - just not religious.” Hmm. He says, “the implication is that being spiritual, following a religion solely of the heart and mind, is a purer more authentic way of communing with God than the physical act of attending church, giving charity or performing good deeds.” Kushner’s colleague Rabbi David Wolpe answered this way. “No, spirituality is what you feel, theology is what you believe, religion is what you do.”

The Book of James speaks to the importance, no the necessity of putting your hands and feet and skills and money where your heart is, where your mind dwells. I believe Jesus says, “Do what I say and as I do.”

A big Sunday comin’ – Everly Belle Bird will be baptized. Men and women called by God and the church will be ordained and installed, and Jesus will reign. You don’t want to miss it!

“God is Not a Man Who Lives in the Sky” – Rabbi Harold Kushner

Online Church is posted on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Watch here.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 20, 2021

2ndpc sermon series book1.png

Father’s Day, Solstice, Juneteenth Sunday!

How would you describe God? That's what Rabbi Harold Kushner asked a class of children. There were the predictable answers from a Hebrew school, “He has a dark beard and wears a yarmulke.” But the more answers he got the more he referred to the commandment that prohibits idols or graven images. Jesus said in John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

When we anthropomorphize God we immediately limit the God of creation, redemption and spirit.

Why would we try to box in the living power of the cosmos?

This Sunday we baptize Andrew Connor McLeod. Come share in the mystery and the joy!

In anticipation –

“Some Things are Just Wrong; Knowing that Makes Us Human” – Rabbi Harold Kushner

Online Church is posted on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Watch here.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 13, 2021

2ndpc sermon series book1.png

“Human beings are the only creatures blessed, or burdened, with a conscience, awareness that there are some things we simply should not do.”

- Rabbi Harold Kushner

Dear Friends in Christ –

In his book Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life, Rabbi Harold Kushner covers a lot – he draws on eighty years of living as husband, father, rabbi, public figure. And as I read I unintentionally default to a position that the Jews are people of the law and Christ followers are people of love. I shake my head and see that I’m shown, in Kushner’s prose, that I do us both a disservice. He relates life events to Old Testament stories that convey universal truths – truths that are foundational to our faith through the New Testament. His scholarship is exhaustive. It sometimes leads to different, nuanced understanding of familiar texts. Can it be that Eve is the heroine of Eden?

Next Sunday on Father’s Day we look at the chapter, "God is Not a Man Who Lives in the Sky" and on June 27, "Give God the Benefit of a Doubt."

As we allow ourselves to savor handshakes and hugs, let’s renew our faith, and welcome new members this Sunday.

In anticipation –

Update on the bell tower

We would like to inform the congregation that the fire damage repairs are on track to begin around the week of July 12th. Both the scaffold company as well as the timber framers will be available at this time. The building permit is in hand and materials with long lead times have been ordered. Budget discussions with the insurer are ongoing and we will be working to meet the project parameters within the provided budget.

Soon after the fire damage repairs begin, we will also restart the steeple crack and coating repairs. These projects will be happening simultaneously. It looks like the insurer is willing to meet most of our requests and we are looking forward to providing the Church with a successful project that we can all be proud of.

The fire sprinkler portion of the project remains under development at this time pending water flow tests, design and acceptance by the fire marshal. In the meantime, the fire sprinkler for the sanctuary is working as designed except for at the very top of the bell tower.

Thanks,
The Bell Tower Committee

The bell tower has been undergoing repairs since January 2020 as part of the vision of the Steeple Fund.
