SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, September 25, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

"In the news and in the pews, Christianity seems to be shriveling."

That line jumped from the page.  One more article about empty pews. One more person saying, "I like Christ - just not his followers." Hmmm. Yet I look around. I keep my ear to the ground and the tom tom beat I hear is different. Oh, a lot of what you may witness, hear or feel may be real, but that doesn’t make it fact. The key for me, for us, is to remember the wisdom of the bumper sticker – Don’t believe everything you think!

Our scripture today bears witness to this; Paul has been having a hard time. In fact he would rather occupy his eternal body rather than remain earthbound, but Jesus’ example gives him the courage to continue his mission to preach the gospel. The good news that God is reconciling people to Godself, forgiving their sin, through faith in Christ. Those in Christ become a new creation.

Are you ready? Are we? It's Gospel Sunday! See you there.

In Great Anticipation,

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, September 18, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

Will Willimon writes that “to be a Christian means gradually, Sunday after Sunday to be subsumed into a different story, a different account of where we have come from and where we are going, a story that is called ‘gospel’. You are properly called a ‘Christian’ when it’s obvious that the story told in scripture is your story, above all the other stories that the world tries to impose on you, and that the God who is rendered in the Scripture is the God who has got you.”

Jesus was a storyteller.

“Jesus invites us into a story that is bigger than ourselves, bigger than our culture, bigger even than our imaginations, and yet we get to tell that story with the scandalous particularity of our particular moment and place in time. We are storytelling creatures because we are fashioned in the image of a storytelling God. May we never neglect the gift of that. May we never lose our love for telling the tale. Amen.” – Rachel Held Evans

You often hear me speak of the particularity of this Second Church. I know that we are called to this place at this time to accomplish that which is revealed day by day.

Let’s determine to live into God’s story together armed with truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, scripture, prayer, and love.

In anticipation,

The Brief Statement of Faith

In 1983, our General Assembly devised a plan to form the Presbyterian Church  (U.S.A.) by joining the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and the Presbyterian Church in the United States.  Realizing the diversity and disagreement in the church, a brief statement of faith was written to identify the common identity Presbyterians share.

According to our Book of Confessions, The Brief Statement of Faith is distinctive in several respects.  Unlike the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creeds, which move directly from Jesus’ birth to his death,  this statement focuses on the significance of Jesus’ ministry in Judea and Galilee.  This confession is gender inclusive and also emphasizes both the roles of men and women in God’s covenant by using feminine as well as masculine imagery of God, thereby affirming the ordination of both men and women. The Brief Statement of Faith is a Trinitarian confession in which the grace of Jesus Christ has first place as the foundation of our knowledge of God’s sovereign love and our life together in the Holy Spirit.

The Book of Confessions reminds us that no confession looks only to the past, rather every confession seeks to cast the light of a priceless heritage on the needs of the present moment, and in doing so shape the future.  It may even reform the tradition itself in the light of the word of God.  From the beginning, the Reformed churches have insisted that the renewal of the church must become visible in the transformation of human lives and societies.  It also states that the church is not a refuge from the world. Rather an elect people is chosen for the blessing of the nations.  Therefore the confessing church itself becomes the body by which Christ continues the blessing of his earthly ministry.

We are incorporating more creeds, confessions and catechisms, both historic and contemporary, as the statements of faith in our worship services. We hope this deepens our understanding of Presbyterian Reformed traditions, prompts questions and discussions and enriches our faith journey.

Surely the Presence of the Lord Is In This Place

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, September 11, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

I’ve started this note to you a number of times.

This is the first time we will have gathered post-pandemic for Homecoming, mask-free and hug hopeful.

The sermon is Surely the Presence of the Lord is in this Place.

Jacob, second son of Isaac and Rebecca, is hightailing out of town. His shenanigans have caught up with him. On his way to his safe house with his uncle, Jacob camps and finds a stone to lay his head and he dreams. Yahweh reveals plans for Israel. Jacob awakes and declares, “What an awesome place this is. It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven.”

Next week we’ll “rally” and start our programmatic year – small groups, Sunday School, stewardship. This Sunday we savor the moment to reunite, to bask in God’s love and share Sunday lunch.

Come on! Invite a friend. You know, it’s not always who you see, but who sees you!

In great anticipation,

Incorporating More Statements of Faith Into Our Worship Service

We all are familiar with the Apostles Creed, but did you know that the Presbyterian Church actually has eleven confessional statements? As written in The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Book of Confessions, the church declares to its members and to the world who and what it is, what it believes, and what it resolves to do. These statements identify the church as a community of people known by its convictions as well as by its actions. They guide the church in its study and interpretation of the Scriptures; they summarize the essence of the Reformed Christian tradition; they direct the church in maintaining sound doctrines; they equip the church for its work and proclamation.

This fall we will incorporate portions of these statements of faith into our worship service. As we move through the various creeds, confessions, and catechisms you'll notice that each comes out of a particular time, place, and circumstance in history; beginning with the Nicene Creed in A.D. 381 after Emperor Constantine won a battle and attributed his victory to Jesus Christ. It then carries us through the reformation in Scotland, Germany, and Switzerland, then onto WWII's resistance of the German Christian accommodation to National Socialism, followed by the racial discrimination of the 1960s and most recently apartheid. These creeds, confessions and catechisms are both historic and contemporary. None have been altered to conform to today's theological, ethical or linguistic norms. They represent the living word – a snapshot of a particular moment. We hope this deepens our understanding of Presbyterian Reformed traditions, prompts questions and discussions and enriches our faith journey. Join us, will you?!

Respectfully Submitted,

Wendy Jewell

Intergenerational Women's Bible Study: Celebrating Sabbath

Please fill out the form if you’d like more information:

Celebrating Sabbath: Accepting God’s Gift of Rest and Delight

Come for a time of Bible study and fellowship where women of all ages are invited to get together from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Robbie Staubes’ house in Mount Pleasant.

September through May we will get together to consider Sabbath

  • as a celebration, not a day of dreary formality

  • as God’s intent for all of creation and that includes busy women too

  • as one day of the week, perhaps a Sunday

  • as a time to surrender unhealthy striving and frantic busyness, and instead trust God will provide

  • as a reminder that life is precious and working too much is against God’s plans for our precious lives

  • as a day devoted to community and justice and not exclusively to self-care

Ultimately, Sabbath reminds us to honor God who
honors us by giving us a day each week to reset our pace, our priorities, and our lives. Friends and visitors are welcome.

Extra copies of the lesson are made available in the narthex ahead of each meeting.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, September 4, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

You talkin to me?’ This phrase from a vintage Robert De Niro film kept sweeping through my mind as I thought about our text this week – the call of Jeremiah.  An encounter with God, an objection to what is asked, an assurance from God. The set up and the process is familiar in Old Testament narratives:

  • Moses at the burning bush

  • Isaiah had a vision of God and lamented

  • Amos when corruption was rampant

Prophets are called when the nights are long and the air is sour. God called Jeremiah as those who were captive have returned to Jerusalem to find it in ruins. They have suffered. They’re subject to despair and Jeremiah has more bad news as the days pass. He didn’t want the job. Especially the more he knew about it.

How often are we brought to a place we wouldn’t choose for a purpose yet to be known?

Jesus God creates, claims, calls and commissions those who are his. We see each day the evidence of his love. Let’s come together for some face time, some heart time, a good time in worship.

We have joyous work to do –
