SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, August 28, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

Yahweh has had enough. The people are worshiping idols. Jerusalem has become a city defiled. She is conquered, the Israelites taken captive and exiled to Babylon.

"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion ... They carried us away in captivity requiring of us a song ... Now how shall we sing the LORD's song in a strange land."

Haunting words sung by a despairing people.

Our text is after their return. Jerusalem is in ruin. Do they roll their sleeves up? Yes, but life is harsh. There's economic depression and people defaulting to pagan habits and imagining shallow rituals are sufficient to their righteous God who, through the prophet Isaiah, sets them straight with a message as important and direct today as it was 2500 years ago.

Folks, we are emerging from the pandemic exile and things are different. Over the next few weeks, we’ll seek a new normal of community that may happen many ways but none sweeter than arm in arm, and face to face.

Stop by. Begin establishing our future together, in service to/with Jesus. Our calling. Our joy.

In great anticipation –

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, August 14, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

You think you have issues? Luke’s Jesus seems to have tired of the sweet talk. He’s just told his disciples the importance of watchfulness and now he let’s fly.

  • He’s come bringing fire. Fire has many meanings in the Bible – the presence of God, judgement, and/or purification.

  • He speaks of baptism – baptism of fire foretold by John, this time not of the world, but the baptism one he will bear to establish a new order for creation. This new order won’t be welcomed by those invested in their own accomplishments and accoutrements.

  • Jesus brings division. Isn’t he called the Prince of Peace? Yes, but not the Prince of Accommodation. The division he brings will produce a cleansing of creation, but not without disrupting even the most intimate of places – the family.

History is written in the rear view. Our task is to speak and embody God’s truth forward – together. What we get to do!

Guest Preacher: Keep the Faith

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m. in-person and live streamed here.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, August 7, 2022

She looked up at me and stated, “I am trying to keep the faith.” For her, it was not some frivolous or dismissive phrase but rather an anchor to cling to in the midst of wild uncertainty. A hope that kept her going, a belief that even in the heart of the chaos, the fear, and the anxiety, God was still with her, would not leave her, and would guide her through.

Our scripture for Sunday comes from Hebrews and it is rich in encouragement to keep the faith even when we might not see the things hoped for come to fruition in our lifetime, even when the going gets rough or things seem impossible.

Friends, as we gather together let us try and keep the faith, keep on hoping, and keep our hearts open to the movements of God who is truly in our midst.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 31, 2022

Mark chapter 5 has some important characters. As we look on Sunday at the synagogue leader, the bleeding woman, the crowd, the disciples, and Jesus, you will see they all have unique differences- and unique similarities. The goal out of the message, is for us to see what character we relate to the most and then reflect on how Jesus relates to us. Can't wait to see you!

Abraham has just been told what the future has in store for him… now he has to deal with the prospects of what is about to happen to Sodom and Gomorrah.

How does Abraham approach this "discussion" with God?

What can we learn from this encounter?

Update on the Graveyard Wall

Dear Friends in Christ –

"As its last order of business City Council approved the settlement (11-0 with one abstention)."

This refers to a settlement between the City and our business neighbor The Dewberry Hotel and it's owner John Dewberry. The particulars you may have read in numerous Post and Courier articles, but with this agreement the City, The Dewberry and Second Presbyterian Church will move forward with the restoration of the failing graveyard wall on Charlotte Street. A long time coming! Remember, we don’t quit!
