SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, February 27, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

This is the last Sunday of Epiphany – the season of discovery, revelation. A time when we may experience different ways of seeing, new perceptions. On Wednesday we begin Lent, a traditional time of introspection. Through prayer and discipline we purposefully seek to discern what may be barring us from our best selves, in best position for God’s grace and also God’s purpose. In years past we may have jettisoned often surface things that are annoying or embarrassing. But this year I propose that even as we acknowledge Jesus’ strength in suffering, integrity in persevering, his dignity in death. I propose we embrace a companion theology of delight. Really? Let’s remember that Jesus came that we might know joy, we might know abundance, and that we might become, through God’s grace, resolute people of joyful purpose.

Though Jesus wasn’t born that we might develop denominational superiority or efficiency, those of us who have evolved into Presbyterians have sought to be faithful and consistent, such that in our constitution we have established Six Great Ends of the Church - six points that establish our raison’d’etre. We will engage those statements over Lent seeing how each speaks to God’s purpose and how through each we become the people of God’s purpose, and live into promised joy and abundance.

Come worship, gaze on the luminous face of the church. Come share in the excitement. Invite someone you love, have missed or haven’t :)

Online or in person -
See you Sunday!

A Prayer for Ukraine

Dear Friends in Christ –

I’m forwarding this Prayer for the Day penned by my friends at Fifth Avenue Church. It captures the reality of this moment that I believe we must acknowledge. Though aggression is not new, the reality that it can be attempted in this time in such brutality supposing no restraint is shocking.

Let us pray:

“The world can be a terribly harsh place. Again and again in history, hatred and violence have conspired to destroy hard-won liberties, economic gains, and human hope. Again and again, innocents have been brutalized by conflicts not of their making and beyond their control. Again and again, nations have been consumed by jealousy and anger arising from base tribalism. In so doing, humankind has ignored the central claim made by every great religion: We who inhabit this planet share one common parent.

We all belong to God.

As Christians, our calling in the face of today’s violence (the calling Jesus put to the disciples) is to resist cynicism and apathy. Our calling will always be to take heart, to pray and to work toward the good.

Today, and in the days to come, I invite you to pray for Ukraine with me.

Eternal God, our only hope,
our help in times of trouble:
we pray for Ukraine and its peoples.

In the midst of this invasion,
as we witness again the horrible violence of war,
we ask you to rescue those who are vulnerable,
to shelter and comfort those who are afraid,
to fill soldiers with decency and honor,
to turn politicians toward diplomacy.
We ask that you pull the hearts and minds of all your children toward peace.

Help us not to despair in the face of this conflict.
Calm and strengthen our hearts.
Turn our eyes toward Jesus, who
entered every room saying: “Peace be with you.”
Help us to embrace our Lord’s sacred way,
so that power might always be used with compassion.
that your will might overrule human willfulness.
and that the song sung by angels might be true:
“Peace on earth. Good will to all.”

Holy God, we pray, this day, for Ukraine and its peoples,
and we pray for all humankind.
Save us from ourselves.
Guide our steps.
Lead us in your way. Amen.”

The Rev. Dr. Scott Black Johnston
Senior Pastor, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, February 20, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

The Spirit, in all their wondrous mystery and mischief, tends to lead me to the passages whose themes speak straight to our human hearts, with our human worries, and our human struggles. The text for this week, Luke 6:27-38, might be one that has been read, quoted, or referenced to us before—the call, invitation, and command to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate us. In a world with so much division, hatred, frustration, and distrust what does this mean for us?  What does this look like? And is this truly possible?

I look forward to gathering together for worship this Sunday to grapple with this text and to worship the God who calls us to the action of love.

– Rev. Margaret Fleming

Rev. Fleming is from Mount Pleasant, SC. She attended Columbia Theological Seminary and graduated in May 2020 and was ordained in Second's sanctuary on April 18, 2021. She is a staff chaplain at Roper/St. Francis Hospital, West Ashley. She and her husband Will have been worshipping at Second since 2017.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, February 13, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

The season of epiphany continues. I know that this time is often looked at as a ‘place holder’, just time to fill between the celebration of Christmas and the season of Lent. But you know that I look at all time as extraordinary. So, let’s expect continuing revelations in this time, too, a fresh or even striking awareness that will shake us up and out of our ennui, or our impatience for the return of that which no longer is – pre-Covid normalcy. What is it that we are to do? Let’s embrace the mandate Jesus gave and underscored, Love the Lord with all your heart and soul and might (the greatest and the first) and your neighbor as yourself (the second, like the first). Jesus says everything else hinges on these two.

Invite someone to join you here or for the live stream as we consider what it means to be devoted to our God who is devoted to us!

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, February 6, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

Now there are some who may have noticed that last week’s sermon was ‘A Place to Belong’. Let’s chalk this up to print schedules. The further I went into the message, I realized we should establish first that Everybody Belongs. We looked to the 25th chapter of Matthew as Jesus prepares his disciples for the life before them without him. He presents those who obey the mandate through both testaments to care for the poor, hungry, cold and imprisoned who were then invited into the favor of their Lord. The others who cared only for themselves weren’t invited in. There was still work for them to do, spiritual growth, longing to be vessels of God’s love. I offered that they weren’t loved less and they were not beyond God’s reach.

Should they walk through the doors of Second Church they would be welcomed to share the grace offered here - in this place of belonging. Let us worship together. Then let us stride into the creation called good to be agents of reclamation and promise and hope.

In great anticipation and great joy in being your pastor –

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, January 30, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

For a good Presbyterian, I’m finding inspiration these weeks from a Jesuit pastor and a Franciscan priest.

Greg Boyle lives the radical inclusion taught and modeled by Jesus as gospel – which it is. He is the founder and director of Homeboy Industries, the world's largest gang-intervention and rehabilitation program.

Richard Rohr founded the Center for Action and Contemplation because he saw, well, a deep need for the integration of both action and contemplation.

Both men have made impact for the kindom of Jesus God by teaching and living their faith in Jesus’ all-consuming and all-inclusive love. This has led to reclaiming and redirecting lives by savoring the life we’re given in all its iterations.

Rohr says, “The absolute religious genius of Jesus is that he utterly refuses all debt codes, purity codes, religious quarantines, and the searching for sinners. He refuses to divide the world into the pure and the impure, much to the chagrin of almost everybody—then and now.”

Let’s learn together. Be inspired together. Grow closer to God together. Worship together.

See you in worship. Invite someone to come along or tune in with you –

Best love in Christ –

This Sunday we'll baptize Jack James Koca, son of Joshua and Jacqueline Koca.
