Bell Tower Roof Repairs

You may have seen the front page picture of a new center king post lowering into place published in the Post and Courier on August 5th. That new post is 13 feet long and weighs about 400 pounds. The top of that new post can be seen here covered, around which the roof is being repaired.

To date, the fire damaged interior roof structure is repaired, either using the original material, if it is sound, or new boards that match the old wood. The contractor has sourced old growth pine boards of the same dimensions to make the structure historically correct and in good repair.

The photos show the progress of replacing sheeting with new boards. We appreciate the hard work to bring the tower to this point; work that included removing two layers of old roofing with underlayment that is difficult to remove. In places, the crew had to chisel up the coverings inch-by-inch. The roof covering will be of the same material as the old one, sheet copper with a white coating to prevent green patina from staining the tower.

In addition, a crew is restoring the wooden shutters that are in the window openings of the eight-sided top section of the tower. This is where the bells sound out the call to worship. This crew is also recoating the interior of the entry vestibule.

This week another crew began work on the masonry, starting at the top tier. While we can appreciate the hidden work in the tower roof structure and are secure in the knowledge it is in keeping with the quality of the original construction, we are in anticipation of the beauty of the tower being revealed once again as the work progresses.

2ndpc sermon series book1.png

Dear Friends in Christ –

A couple of weeks ago I told you about a dishtowel I’d picked up as a housewarming gift for a friend – Hell is Hot, Time is Short, and Stakes are High! This Sunday, the text is Joshua’s climactic moment with the people he has led to the land promised to their ancestors. The defining statement is this, that you can find on cards, cloths and, I pray, on people’s hearts: "As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord".

What does this mean in the context of these times of war, pandemic and confusion? A way forward!

Let’s gather in the sanctuary and online, positioned for God’s grace –

Dear friends in Christ –

Some people are unsettled by the depiction of Yahweh the warrior God who directed the annihilation of defeated peoples. We struggle with ancient narratives that don't sync with our concept of the Lord of peace. Yet Jesus had moments of righteous anger and declarations of woe. In our passage from Ephesians, Paul uses images the people would recognize that speak to the practical strength of the fierce God who loves and protects God’s own.

Nations fall. Pandemics morph and rage. Our most potent weapon remains Jesus’ love.

In Christ/in confidence –

Helping our neighbors in Haiti

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is the refugee and disaster response program of the PC(USA). You can find out more information at pda.pcusa.org and respond to the devastation of the recent earthquake in Haiti and other crises with your prayers and by donating directly.

If you’d like to support Second Presbyterian’s missions you can do so here.

From PDA:

The scale of the disaster facing Haiti after the Aug. 14 earthquake is becoming clearer. The quake and its aftershocks have left almost 1,300 people dead, thousands more injured and an unknown number of people are still missing. At least 13,000 homes were destroyed and roads, bridges and communication systems have been severely damaged. This catastrophe comes on top of Haiti’s ongoing struggles with endemic hunger and poverty, COVID-19 and continuing civil unrest, and as Tropical Storm Grace bears down on the region.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is providing emergency relief and short-term recovery in the impacted areas through our established local partners and in collaboration with ACT Alliance and its members. The PC(USA), through PDA and together with regional World Mission colleagues, will remain active throughout the entire recovery process, accompanying our partners in the area as they determine long-term program needs and providing financial support for rebuilding and resilience.

The needs for the response will be great. God’s people are once again called on to stand in the "GAP" — Give. Act. Pray.
