The Sandwich Stop

“The Sandwich Stop”

A Missions Fundraiser at Second Presbyterian Church

Friday, May 28th and Saturday, May 29th

11:00 a.m.  -  1:00 p.m.

Our beloved Tea Room will not be held this year due to safety guidelines recommended by the CDC for large gatherings.  Plans are that it will return in 2022!  “The Sandwich Stop” is a way that Second Church can continue the tradition of being a part of this exciting time of the year during Piccolo Spoleto.  “The Sandwich Stop” will offer freshly made lunches for purchase by vendors and customers in Wragg Square during the first weekend of the Spoleto Crafts Show.  We want folks to know that Second Presbyterian is here to serve.

Volunteers are needed for 2 hours each day to serve customers and other duties such as assembling lunches prior to the event.  We also need a lot of homemade nut-free cookies and bar-type desserts. Monetary donations are welcomed to help pay for items needed to make the lunches. “The Sandwich Stop” will be set up outside in the shade and safety precautions will be followed.  Proceeds of this event go to Missions of Second Church to help those less fortunate.  Please know that your help is needed and appreciated.

Email or send a text if you’d like to volunteer or need further information.

Debbie Smith, Dawn McCready, & Carol Howe

Make a monetary donation to help pay for items needed to make the lunches. Every cent goes toward Missions!

Dear Friends in Christ –

“God is love. And those who abide in love abide in God and God abides in them.”

These are the first words of our worship. These words state the essence of our faith. In these words our comfort, identity, our purpose is revealed.

This Sunday Jesus is in the last moments of his time with those whom he has called and whom he loves. He has washed their feet. He clarifies their relationship. Come celebrate our mothers, including Mother God. Bring a lunch, smile, a friend. Let us abide with each other.

See you in worship –

An Open Letter to Tucker on the Occasion of his Baptism

Dear Friends in Christ –

I’ve told this story many times: I remember my mother’s baptism. I was a little boy in the sanctuary of Worth Heights Baptist Church – actually little more than a darkened assembly hall in Fort Worth, Texas. I was with some neighbors as I watched my mother take the pastor's hand and step down into the pool. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and, though I couldn’t really hear what was being said, he placed his hand over her mouth and nose and lay her back. When she reappeared, the water fell in droplets from her long red hair. I recall the light caught in those droplets that reflected like jewels.

Not too long after that, I would stand behind the curtain and take Bro. McManus’ hand and step into the pool. This time I would hear some of the words as he cradled me in his arm, placed his hand over my nose and mouth and lowered me into the water. I recall him saying, "Cress, I baptize you in the name of the Father, ... and Holy Spirit!" I shook the water from my eyes.

Dear friends, in these times we need to remember, to witness, to share in the transformation, the adoption of Jesus’ own. This week we baptize Tucker Plotner. See you in Church –

In great anticipation,

Serenade to Music

Here is a beautiful virtual recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music”, done by the Taylor Festival Choir, including our own director Lee Lingle and choir member Kiri Taylor:

Mother's Day Special Offering

mothers day offering.JPG

Since 1954, Presbyterian churches in our state have marked Mother’s Day with an offering to support the ministry to older adults that is provided by Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina.

PCSC operates six retirement communities which hundreds of seniors call “home.” As you can imagine, 2020 was difficult for Presbyterian Communities. The ever-changing regulations restricted visitation, and residents had to adapt to communicating digitally with their families. Thankfully, vaccinations were made available early to seniors, and the communities have begun to “open up” again for visitation.

Living at a Presbyterian Community, residents find everything they need to live life to its fullest. Each location provides a full range of accommodations and services including Independent Living, Assisted Living, Healthcare and Memory Support. Residents are empowered to “grow old,” and not just “get old.”

And yet, after years of living at their community, some will find their financial resources dwindling, perhaps due to a costly medical crisis or to extreme old age.

Thankfully, the Presbyterian churches who founded this ministry continue to sustain it. One way we do this is through the Mother’s Day Offering, which is used solely to provide charitable care for residents who have outlived their life’s savings.

It is truly a blessing that generous Presbyterian churches and their members help to shelter and care for each and every one of these through the Mother’s Day Offering.

On Mother’s Day, May 9, our congregation will continue this tradition of caring that touches the lives of these seniors in need. Because of your generosity, these folks will continue to call Presbyterian Communities “home,” and know that they are truly cared for and not forgotten.

You can give in the church service or online.
