Honoring the significant contribution of Charleston's Septima Clark.


Septima Poinsette Clark was called the mother of the civil rights movement. She was a teacher for 40 years and has a long legacy of education and teacher activism. She fought to allow Black teachers in Charleston classrooms and was later instrumental in gaining pay equity for Black teachers in South Carolina, and her citizenship workshops influenced Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks.

Septima started teaching on Johns Island because Black teachers were not allowed in Charleston schools at the time. She taught for 40 years mostly in Charleston and Columbia until she was fired because she refused to resign from the NAACP after South Carolina passed a statute that prohibited city and state employees from belonging to civil rights organizations. She went on to develop citizenship workshops full time that King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference took nationwide. They were designed not only to promote adult literacy but to educate people about civics and get them involved in their communities.

Septima pioneered the concept of citizenship schools and went on to create over 800 of them across the South. The schools are credited with helping three-quarters of a million African Americans register to vote by the end of the 1960s. She retired from SCLC in 1970 and was elected to the Charleston School Board in 1975. The governor reinstated her pension the next year after declaring her 1956 termination unjust. She also published two memoirs, earned her master's degree, and was given a Living Legacy Award by President Carter. Septima Clark saw herself as “just a teacher,” but she mothered a movement and helped shape an entire country for the better.

Dear Friends in Christ —

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing.” - Annie Dillard

Are you comforted by this statement? Threatened? Confused? What other phrases are conjured to point to the importance of how we spend our time? “This is not a dress rehearsal.”

You’ve heard me reference, Debi Thomas, an essayist for the weekly webzine, Journey with Jesus. She’s director of children's and family ministries at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto, California. I enjoy her writing. It stems from life experience rather than theological systematics. It resonates for me. Her weekly essay often directs me to facets of the text that I may not have seen before. #ContinuingRevelation

So with her prompt, I see that Mark is giving us a gift of a day in the life of the incarnate God. So how does Jesus spend a Sunday afternoon? Let’s look together and share communion. Grab your common elements.

Let’s be strengthened.

Day of Service: Clean up the Graveyard

Come clean up the graveyard on Saturdays, Feb. 13th, 20th, and 27th from 10-12, as weather allows.

If you can, please bring a rake, leaf bags, or a leaf blower. Children are welcome! They can run around and help pick up twigs. Remember, the more people that help out, the quicker the graveyard will get cleaned up!

If you can't make it on Saturdays, there is always plenty of raking to be done as you are able, just please take leaf bags out to the sidewalk curb for collection. Please contact the church office or the McCready's will any questions.

UPDATE: February 27th has been added to the calendar! One quarter of the graveyard has been cleared which amassed about 50 bags of leaves! Grateful to everyone who has helped out so far.

Prints in Clay

A Charleston visual exhibit display at the Gaillard in 2019 told the story of the Slave Dwelling Project, with a selection of photographs highlighting the historic dwellings, in various states of preservation including Dontre Major's 'Prints in Clay.'

Several of the images exhibited were taken here at Second Presbyterian Church. Dontre Major who is a studio art alumnus of the College of Charleston was welcomed into the graveyard and bell tower to photograph the evidence of the men, women, and children who would have built the bricks and structures that are the very fabric of our city. These fingerprints found in bricks of antebellum buildings are tangible evidence of the presence of the enslaved people who made the bricks that helped build this nation.

Black History Month is not just about one month, but a commitment to education, celebration, and affirmation of Black lives every day. We see, value, and honor Black people in our lives and communities, all those who came before, and all those making history today. 

On the anniversary of this Black History Month, may we all recommit to lifting up black authors, thinkers, and movement makers and intentionally diversify our bookshelves, lives, and communities throughout the year.

This Black History month we will be honoring the significant contribution of Black people in our community.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, January 31, 2021

Dear Friends in Christ —

This week we look at Mark 1, where Jesus has moved on to Capernaum from Galilee. On Saturday morning, he and his friends go to the synagogue and Jesus preaches. Those present that day are “astounded at his teaching,” amazed, blown away, spellbound, “for he taught them as one having authority.”

They "kept asking one another, ‘What is this?’”

Can you recall a time when God grabbed you? When an encounter, word, or image astonished you? These are rough, unlikely days for astonishment. These are rough easy days for fatigue as we struggle to multitask under face masks, death tolls, mutations, and quarantines.  

It’s not just different, it’s hard! Despite distance and masks, not everyone can gather in person, so our access to spiritual community, holy space, ritual, and sacrament is limited. So let’s gather as we may this Sabbath. Let’s read the Word, pray for ourselves and all of God’s created (that which and whom God loves as God loves us). 

Invite everyone you know. Let’s position ourselves for grace.

Let’s worship Jesus —

Hands of Christ Update

Hands of Christ celebrates its 2020 distribution amid the pandemic and plans for 2021 and the future 

Hands of Christ is planning a 2021 distribution of school clothing and school supplies to support children in the Lowcountry and other areas throughout South Carolina with an eye on evolving COVID protocol 

Since 2003, Hands of Christ has provided school uniforms and school supplies to over 57,000 children in Charleston, Berkley, Dorchester & Colleton Counties and other areas throughout South Carolina. 13 churches served as distribution sites in 2019 where plans were in place to serve 4800 children, grades K-3 through 8, over a 4-week period. 2020 posed a special challenge as people could not gather together to staff the event or to receive the critical supplies. 

Undaunted, the Hands of Christ team created a method of contactless ordering and delivery, with the support of the Charleston County School District. 830 children received clothing and school supplies in pre-ordered bags, and churches in Orangeburg and Summerville held modified distributions, allowing the ministry to serve close to 1000 school children. The plan for 2021 is still being developed, but the organization plans to serve as many children as are safely possible, within the boundaries allowed by the ever-evolving COVID protocol. 

Jim Frye, Operations Manager for Hands of Christ noted: “We want to be ready to serve the children this summer, whether with pre-packaged bags, a drive-through operation, an in-person distribution—or any combination to meet the needs of the underserved population.” 

Hands of Christ is funded primarily by the member Presbyterian Churches, individual donors, local businesses and foundations. The 3 Presbyterian Churches on James Island and Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church sponsor fundraising concerts as well. The James Island churches came together this year for a virtual concert, giving a performance of “We Shall Overcome,” arranged by Horace Scruggs. 

At a recent meeting of the Hands of Christ team, Mr. Frye noted: “We don’t know what the platform will be this summer; and future years may be different as well. We have to be prepared, and we will.”

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, January 24, 2021

Dear Friends in Christ –

Last week and many times before, I’ve spoken of the disciples in terms that were, perhaps, less than flattering. Certainly the gospels speak of them in all their humanity, a humanity that we share. They might be the hoi polloi – the common people – they may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer, nor the bravest folks on the field. They are at times ambitious and at other times disloyal and cowardly. But I think I may have sold them short and in so doing, questioned Jesus’ judgment. Would the incarnate God have stopped by without a sure-shot plan?

This week we’ll look at what the gospels don’t tell us about the disciples that Jesus surely knew. We’ll be strengthened knowing Jesus sees us not as we are, but as we can be together in Christ.

Tune in or stop by at 10:30 a.m.– let’s gather to worship Jesus.

Souper Bowl of Caring

The annual Souper Bowl of Caring empowers youth and unites communities around the time of the Super Bowl to help those in need by teaming up with local partners.

Donations will be received in the designated soup pot in the narthex Sunday, February 7, 2021 and can be given online through the end of the month. 100% of donations we collect will go to Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation, fighting island hunger with healthy food and clean water one meal at a time. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with local organizations as they seek to do kingdom work in the world. Because of donations like yours, Souper Bowl of Caring is able to mobilize a movement to fight hunger and poverty locally.
