Dear Friends in Christ –
‘Making Much of What Cannot Matter Much to God’ is a phrase originally in the body of a prayer by Willard B. Sperry who at the time of writing was the Dean of Harvard Divinity School.
The prayer:
Give to us, Lord, a right discernment between that which comes first in our faith and that which follows after. And when we would make much of that which cannot matter much to thee, recall us to the heart of our Christian profession, Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Sometimes the topic is ‘Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing’. There are many ways to express that which is worthy of our attention, then worthy of our work, then worthy of our worship. And for each there is a diametric distraction. There is always that which is good but inhibits our search for the excellent.
Join us here at the Second Presbyterian Church of Charleston as we, in faith, return to Sunday School and strive toward only that which is worthy - Jesus.
