The Second Presbyterian Missions team acts as a bridge by fostering partnerships, guiding congregational discernment, managing resources for, and engaging in local community support to ensure the church is an integral part of our neighborhood.
Hands of Christ
Since 2003, Charleston-area PC(USA) congregations have come together to meet the basic needs of children, showing them Christ’s love by helping them start each school year with school supplies and new sets of clothes they get to pick out ahead of the new school year.
Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation
The foundation is on a mission to honor Tywanza’s memory by giving youth opportunities to pursue their dreams. Scholarships are given out to local high school students headed to college and Camp Wanza is hosted each summer for students with entrepreneurial spirits.
The Navigation Center
The Navigation Center supports vulnerable and unhoused populations in Charleston by helping those in crisis navigate the very complex ecosystem of organizations that provide services they need to rebuild a sustainable independent life for themselves and their families.
Star Gospel Mission
For over 120 years, Star Gospel Mission has cared for the Charleston community by compassionately providing transitional housing, emergency assistance, and resources for people in experiencing homelessness, hardships, or addictions.
Habitat for Humanity
Charleston Habitat for Humanity works with local families to build and improve safe, affordable homes. By building new homes in existing neighborhoods and providing critical home repairs to existing homes, Habitat helps to strengthen the Charleston community.
Charleston Area Justice Ministry
The Charleston Area Justice Ministry (CAJM) is a faith-based collective network of like-minded people working to empower those marginalized in our community.
Shaw Center
The Shaw Community Center on Mary Street offers after school programs, homework help, sports, and summer camp opportunities in the heart of Charleston’s eastside.
Walk for Water
Water Mission's Walk for Water is a unique event where you can walk in the shoes of our global neighbors as you raise awareness and funds to fight the global water crisis.
Special Offerings
Three denomination-wide offerings are received each year as well as regional special offerings for Thornwell and Mother’s Day.
First Sunday Food Drive
A monthly communion Sunday collection of donations to be shared throughout the community.
Please drop off pantry staples, diapers and desserts in the Education Building to be distributed the first week of each month. Donations go to seniors living at the Canterbury House, the Junior League of Charleston Diaper Bank, and “Meals on Mondays” lunches for food-insecure folks on Wadmalaw.
Third Sunday Breakfast
A group from Second Pres serve breakfast at Star Gospel Mission before church each month on third Sundays.
Fourth Sunday Supper
Second Presbyterian hosts supper with The Navigation Center for our unhoused and in-need neighbors each week and a group from Second Pres provides and serves the meal on fourth Sundays.
Jesus said, “I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me… Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me.”

In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), local mission teams act as coordinators for a congregation's call to service, focusing on building long-term, sustainable partnerships rather than simply or merely fixing problems. Missions teams facilitate engagement in God’s mission by addressing emergency, ongoing, and systemic needs, often aligning with the Matthew 25 initiative to build congregational vitality, dismantle structural racism, and eradicate systemic poverty.
