Hands of Christ
2026 Downtown Distribution at Second Presbyterian Church | August 1st from 10:00 -1:00 p.m.
Help us fulfill our mission by volunteering to serve!
The mission of Hands of Christ is to bring Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations together to meet the basic needs of children, showing them Christ's love at the start of each school year by providing school supplies and clothing and on an emergency basis throughout the school year. There are 26 member churches and 5 counties in eastern South Carolina are served: Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Williamsburg.
2026 is our 10th year serving as the downtown distribution site for Hands of Christ. In the past 9 years, we have served 2512 children downtown, grades K-4 through 8. The organization has served 70,722 young people in since 2003.
In 2025, 12 distributions were hosted around the Lowcountry, where every child received two sets of new school clothing and grade-appropriate school supplies, along with bibles for each family. In addition, Dolly Parton’s Begin with Books participated along with a crafts coordinator to help the children pass the time while waiting to shop. Working together with our partner First (Scots), along with Mt. Pleasant, Yeamans Park, other local congregations and volunteers from the Presbytery, Hands of Christ gives us a time to work hand-in-hand to support the youth of the Lowcountry.
Our greatest need is always personal shoppers who will accompany each child as they select clothing for the coming school year. We’ll need people to help with registration and to monitor activity in the Sanctuary, men and women to guide children and their guardians as they visit boy’s and girl’s pants, shirts, undies and socks stations, as well as distribute school supplies and Bibles.
Help us spread the word: If you know of any organization who supports children, please communicate our willingness to help. We’ve seen a drop in attendance since the pandemic. More recently, we feel some families are less comfortable venturing out due to the possibility of immigration enforcement at local events. That makes the need even more critical.
