SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 28, 2024

Do you believe in miracles?

In a world that turns more skeptical every day of anything “miraculous,” believers are faced with questions like does God really care about us and creation? Or maybe you wonder why the stories of Jesus feeding the five thousand and walking on water that we will examine this Sunday never seem to happen any more in our modern world.

This weekend, I encourage us to read the Scripture from John 6:1-21 and hear the story fresh again. Maybe we will see something new that we never have seen before. Maybe we will be able to recognize miracles happening right in front of our noses. And perhaps we will discover that with Jesus, there is always enough – for ALL.

See you Sunday,
Steven

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 14, 2024

The Bible is full of individuals who are not ready to be called, perhaps none more than Paul. Paul’s calling was undeniable, but he had to come a very long way.

We are all called, how will we respond?

Ken Carrington is a K5 teacher at Second Presbyterian Kindergarten, and is Director of Children and Youth for Second Presbyterian. His greatest joy is teaching the Children’s sermon. Ken is currently a candidate for a Commissioned Pastor in the Presbyterian Church.

Unfortunately Ken ended up in urgent care on Sunday morning, but our own Rev. Steven Baines was able to step in to deliver a wonderful sermon that he had been working on for later in the summer. This sermon will be delivered Sunday, July 21 instead and Ken will preach again August 25, in turn with Rev. Baines stepping in for him on July 14.

This Sunday we welcome our guest preacher, Rev. Dr. Marion Platt. He is the sixth Executive Director and Pastor of Star Gospel Mission’s 120-year history and serves on the Faith-Based Advisory Council of the International African American Museum.

When he isn’t serving others, “Pastor Marion” can be found fishing in a local creek, running long distances in the sun, fussing over his vegetable garden, or quietly listening to jazz music.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 30, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

In 2 Chronicles 20, a great multitude came against God’s people. King Jehoshaphat and his people set their hearts to seek the Lord and to fast.

The king cried out to God a prayer that most of us have prayed at times in our spiritual journey: “We have no might against these that come against us, neither do we know what to do; but our eyes are upon you” (20:12).

“The Spirit of God came in the midst of the congregation…saying, Be not afraid nor dismayed…for the battle is not yours, but God’s" (20:14-15).

Sounds good doesn’t it? Can we believe it? Should we? Guess what – three times…YES!

See you this Gospel Sunday.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 23, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

In our text this Sunday, Jesus pivots. The focus moves from teaching, healing, and preaching to the completion of his purpose; ‘he set his face toward Jerusalem’.

As he strides towards his destiny, he encounters three people who say, “I will follow you (Jesus) but…”

The cost of the journey!

If we would follow Jesus, we too must be prepared:

  • for some of our primary loyalties become secondary.

  • for conflict of good with good.

  • to have some of our cherished loyalties rearranged.

Join us in worship this Sunday. We’re engaging God’s word and singing praise because… we get to! Don’t miss out!

Re-Possessed 2024

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 16, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

Jesus is crossing over the Sea of Galilee to the land of the Gerasenes –actually crossing the sea and also crossing boundaries. The land of the Gerasenes is a land of Gentiles.

Jesus lands and immediately a man appears. We are told he is possessed. Actually, he’s more than possessed, he’s occupied. When asked his name, the answer is uttered through the man by the spirits that possess him. “Legion,” they say. The man himself has no name, no identity left, except for what/whom he is captive to. He is alone, wandering the tombs, a danger to himself and to others. But Jesus sees him and has compassion.

Come to worship as we set sail with Jesus, the God who casts out demons and casts his love on us.

See you in worship!
