SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 23, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

In our text this Sunday, Jesus pivots. The focus moves from teaching, healing, and preaching to the completion of his purpose; ‘he set his face toward Jerusalem’.

As he strides towards his destiny, he encounters three people who say, “I will follow you (Jesus) but…”

The cost of the journey!

If we would follow Jesus, we too must be prepared:

  • for some of our primary loyalties become secondary.

  • for conflict of good with good.

  • to have some of our cherished loyalties rearranged.

Join us in worship this Sunday. We’re engaging God’s word and singing praise because… we get to! Don’t miss out!

Re-Possessed 2024

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 16, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

Jesus is crossing over the Sea of Galilee to the land of the Gerasenes –actually crossing the sea and also crossing boundaries. The land of the Gerasenes is a land of Gentiles.

Jesus lands and immediately a man appears. We are told he is possessed. Actually, he’s more than possessed, he’s occupied. When asked his name, the answer is uttered through the man by the spirits that possess him. “Legion,” they say. The man himself has no name, no identity left, except for what/whom he is captive to. He is alone, wandering the tombs, a danger to himself and to others. But Jesus sees him and has compassion.

Come to worship as we set sail with Jesus, the God who casts out demons and casts his love on us.

See you in worship!

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 9, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

This Sunday we continue our engagement with Luke’s compelling narrative. Jesus shocks a dinner crowd by… being Jesus– a healer,  a mind reader, a  provocateur, and a forgiver of sins.

How do we get on that guest list? Your name is already there!

Kum Ba Yah Christ

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 2, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

I often speak of the narrative sweep of the Bible; how from the first page of Genesis, to the last line of John’s Revelation, the story is of God’s care, God’s provision and God’s inexhaustible love.

In the 7th Chapter of the Gospel of Luke we are told how Jesus has just restored the health of a Roman Centurion’s beloved servant. Now Jesus and a large crowd head toward a village called Nain.  They encounter a funeral. By design? By chance? Doesn’t matter. The God of compassion, healing and restoration has stopped by and a trajectory of despair is avoided.

We pray to Jesus, “kumbaya” (kum ba yah / "come by here") or "where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them."

Believe it! See you at Pride, and see you in worship!

With great hope –

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, May 26, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

We are a community living into a future that has been enabled by a multi-dimensional presence: the God of creating, redeeming and sustaining. This Sunday we engage a conceptual reality, the Trinity.

We also acknowledge and honor those who have given their lives to the defense of another conceptual reality, our nation.

Another chance to gather in obedience, anticipation, and joy!

With great joy in being you pastor –

Pentecost Sunday

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, May 19, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

This weekend is most often one of celebration for many people and many reasons.

  • The Jewish community celebrates the festival of the harvest – Pentecost – 50 days after Passover.

  • The Christian community celebrates the wholescale appearance of God’s Spirit.

  • Across the nation, school is out and camp is in.

  • Here in Charleston, the Spoleto Festival is about to take off.

Just four years ago our lives and life around the world was disrupted by virus. Our work, our relationships, our leisure, our worship has all changed… and will never be the same. I cannot imagine that these times are random.

2,000 years ago, at a particular moment in time, the Spirit swept in and transformed the world. Theologian and journalist, Phylis Tickle posits that every 500 years since Jesus walked the earth, the church has undergone massive transformation. It’s been 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his theses to the church door at Wittenberg....

Tune in!

In anticipation and excitement for the Spirit’s leading –

Mother's Day

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, May 12, 2024

Dear Friends in Jesus –

When I arrived here in Charleston to serve the Second Presbyterian Church there were a number of traditions in place, none more delightful than Seersucker Suit and Fancy Hat Sunday.

Always on Mother’s Day, we would take an offering for The Village Summerville, a Presbyterian retirement facility. We would have lunch on the portico and in the park. There would be prizes for hats that would be judged by fluid criteria. This following… church!

The lectionary text would be from the 17th chapter of John. I never really thought about how wonderfully this text on a day honoring mothers fit with Jesus’ long goodbye – farewell discourse that coached, tutored, taught his nearest conditioning them for their life to come.

This Sunday, Jesus speaks to us through scripture on this Mother’s Day, Seersucker/Fancy Hat Day, come-to-church, come-to-each-other, and come-to-Jesus day.

See you in Church –
