Dear Friends in Christ –

There is a story told about Mark Twain, the American humorist of the 19th century. Supposedly at the height of his success he was paid $5 per word for every word that he wrote! So… an admirer sent a check to him for $2500 and asked what was his favorite word. Twain kept the check and sent back a note that said, “thanks!” His note reflected a sentiment formalized in this country in 1621 when the pilgrims set aside a day of Thanksgiving after their first harvest. It was in 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November.

His proclamation began: "The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God."

He states this “in the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity.”

150 years later we are in the midst of continuing wars, we have witnessed unparalleled natural catastrophes, and much of the world that was created and deemed “good” is under siege, in famine or conflict. And we– who were created, we are told, in God’s image and deemed “very good”– find new opportunities to perpetrate terror in the old fashioned ways of natural and unnatural tragedies which will shape generations.

And still, the community of faith confounds the world, each other, and sometimes ourselves. We approach this season with thanksgiving, and I would suggest that we approach this time also with praise.

With great joy in being your pastor –

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, November 19, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

I recall a sermon by a friend in a small church near a place we had in the country. Each year he gave the same sermon on Commitment Sunday, essentially: give ‘til you giggle. He was portly, he had a way with a story, and he could get away with it.

Does this make sense today? These are not just uncertain times, not just rollercoaster times, but these are heavy times– toxic, dangerous times.

What better time to be reminded that we are held at all times by a prescient God who knows our challenges? A God who is faithful, constant and generous in dispensing that which is the antidote to the toxins of the world – godly love.

Let’s remember what it is that we get to do as those who follow the way of Jesus. Let us gather Sunday in the embrace of the covenant of our God, with each other and welcoming others into the joy of Jesus, determined and committed to be the conduits of the love of Jesus.

Gospel music, new members, positioned for grace – a respite from the headlines.

In anticipation –

Where Is Your Heart?

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, November 12, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

We read from the First Testament, the 24th chapter of the Book of Joshua. Aaron has assembled the tribes of the nation of Israel. He offers them a choice. It has to do with loyalty,  with commitment, with covenant. Serve other gods of the land or Yahweh.

In the days of the First Testament, loyalty didn’t come cloaked in the warmth of acceptance, trust and support that reflect what we hold to be the best in relationships in our modern culture, but rather it was based more on trepidation, deference requiring constant vigilance and in a hopeful dependence that characterized a person’s relationship with social superiors who were truly lord and master over their lives.

Aaron warns the people that they are not up to the task. But they cry, “We will serve the Lord!” And he says, “You are witnesses against yourselves!” In plain language, they agreed to be held accountable… by their own words!

So in this moment in the churn of war, and natural disasters, and suspicions rampant, we are to decide, to commit, to affirm our covenant with our God --  and with each other. We are to affirm where our heart is and where our loyalty lies – with Jesus and the way of true power, the power of love. This is what we must do and what we get to do.

With great joy in being your pastor,

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, November 5, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

This Sunday we celebrate All Saints' Day – a day of remembrance for those people of faith  whom we love and who have had a profound influence on/in our lives as. All Souls' Day the next day commemorates those within the faith who have passed.

What is the common word within the description of these two days? Faith. Hebrews 11 begins, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Don’t we need some now?

I won’t spit out a litany of chaos and cruelty. For that you can open most any platform. Our task and, yes, our privilege is to witness to and offer that which can heal, that which can bridge the gap, that which is inexhaustible, that which is more powerful than hate.

Important times in which we are called to important action.

In the name of Jesus –

The Tywanza Sanders Scholarship Fund was established by Race 4 Achievement to help provide pathways to education and academic excellence for students in remembrance of Tywanza Sanders, the youngest victim of the Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Massacre. Dear friends of Tywanza have organized this initiative and they are gearing up for the 9th annual Race 4 Wanza Doughnut Dash in April 2024. The event pays tribute to Tywanza Sanders and has funded over $20,000 worth of scholarships awarded to local seniors.

Michele Gray was one of Tywanza’s closest friends and she helps to run Race for Achievement and the Tywanza Sanders Scholarship Fund. Michele is a member of Second Presbyterian and will join us this Sunday to talk about Tywanza Sanders Scholarship Fund and Legacy Foundation.

November is Thornwell Emphasis Month

In 1875, Presbyterian minister William Plumer Jacobs opened Thornwell Orphanage to ten children. Now, although children who need a loving home are still welcome there in Clinton, Thornwell is known throughout South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida as a source for training foster parents and working with and helping to heal families in need of support.

Family changes everything in a child’s life, and Thornwell addresses the welfare of children not as a singular event, but rather as a comprehensive, ongoing cycle of services and support designed to help children and families, no matter what stage of life they’re in.

Our offering for Thornwell will be given in the service on November 19, 2023, and your gifts are welcome online now and through the end of the month.

What Thornwell Does to Help Children and Families

Foster Care – We help place children who have no relatives to care for them with loving families who can provide the security and shelter of a stable home.

Residential Care – We provide a safe family-like home setting where children can recover from trauma and disruptions while their families cope with crisis. The new legal realities mean that big changes have come to Thornwell, but we remain committed to providing residential care for children and families in need.

Child Development Services – We provide nurturing care and educational support to children and families, including pregnant and teen moms, to support healthy futures for kids.

Academic Services – We provide essential education support that addresses distinct learning gaps and provides personalized learning for children and families in need.

Family Engagement – We offer several highly-personalized programs to teach parents important skills and coping tools that help them build a stable family and strengthen it over time through love and support.

Transitional Living Services – We help young people on the verge of adulthood adjust to an independent life outside the foster care system, with housing, life skills training, advanced education support, and workforce preparedness resources.

November is when we at Second Presbyterian remember Thornwell through a special offering. Please give to support this mission.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, October 29, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

In his book, The Magnificent Defeat, author and Presbyterian minister Frederick Buechner writes of love:

"The love for equals is a human thing--of friend for friend, brother for brother. It is to love what is loving and lovely. The world smiles.

The love for the less fortunate is a beautiful thing--the love for those who suffer, for those who are poor, the sick, the failures, the unlovely. This is compassion, and it touches the heart of the world.

The love for the more fortunate is a rare thing--to love those who succeed where we fail, to rejoice without envy with those who rejoice, the love of the poor for the rich, of the black man for the white man. The world is always bewildered by its saints.

And then there is the love for the enemy--love for the one who does not love you but mocks, threatens, and inflicts pain. The tortured's love for the torturer. This is God's love. It conquers the world."

We watch in horror as more people are randomly murdered, as a captive people is denied food, water, fuel and shelter, as revenge is exacted unabated, we look to the promise and reality of God’s love and we pray to be God’s instruments.

Jesus commands that we love God with all our heart, mind and soul and that we love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

We must remember and honor our covenant to be conduits of God’s love however it may be manifest. It is the only hope for these days. It’s what we get to do.

The Navigation Center supports vulnerable and unhoused populations in Charleston by helping those in crisis navigate the very complex ecosystem of organizations that provide services they need to rebuild a sustainable independent life for themselves and their families.

This Sunday, The Navigation Center CEO, Marie Elana Roland, will join us in the 10:30 service for a "Minute for Mission" alongside Tim and Elizabeth Killen. The fourth Sunday of each month the Killen family and volunteers serve supper at the church for The Navigation Center.

Church in the Park

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, October 22, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

How many of you like roller coasters? The experience of intentionally putting yourself into circumstances that feel, or may actually be life-threatening or at the least lunch-throwing.

For some a roller coaster is exhilarating. For some may be terrifying. But we usually have the opportunity to buy the ticket, stand in line– to have time to reconsider– before we step onto the platform and into the ride called The Cyclone, or The Twister, or The Anaconda or The Avalanche, or Buzzsaw Falls.

It seems like these last few weeks we’ve been unable to get off the roller coaster. If it’s not the economy, it’s the election, it’s the wars, it’s the earth-quaking, fires incinerating and the specter of the deluge. We realize how powerless we are.

In our text, two unlikely groups unite to take down this upstart itinerant preacher. This Sunday we’ll see their games don’t work.

Come to the park. Fresh air, gospel music and the gospel – invite everybody you know!
