Intergenerational Women's Circle: Sacred Encounters
Please fill out the form if you’d like more information:
Sacred Encounters: The Power and Presence of Jesus Christ in Luke-Acts
Come for a time of Bible study and fellowship where women are invited to get together from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Robbie Staubes’ home in Mount Pleasant.
September through May we will get together to consider Jesus and Jesus’ disciples who shared the Good News through sacred encounters with everyday people.
The Gospel According to Luke and the book of the Acts of the Apostles, or Luke-Acts, “one story in two parts,” demonstrate the unfolding of God’s redemptive purposes in human history and present a distinctive perspective on the person and work of Jesus Christ. Written by Luke, a physician and traveling companion of Paul, the message to the early Christian community (and to us) is radical, inclusive, and hope-filled.

We are all in some way called. Some of us hear it louder than others. Some hear but turn away. We all pretty much know the story of Jonah and that big fish. There is a lot more to it then you might remember. In fact, you might just find yourself in that whale.

Volunteer with the Children and Youth on Sundays
We are excited to expand our opportunities for children and youth ministry this year to include more activities to foster curiosity and wonder in their spiritual lives. It’s only possible with an amazing team of volunteers invested in supporting the children in our faith community.
Please sign up to volunteer at least 2 or 3 times this semester.
Volunteers are needed on Sunday mornings to help in the nursery (0-2 year olds) and to lead the activity and lesson for either the 3-5K group or 1st-5th graders after the Children’s Chapel group time. You will need to walk over with the children to the Chapel after the Time for Children during church and then walk the children down to your assigned classroom for the lesson and activities. Note that the Time for Children will be a little earlier in the service to allow some more time for these children's ministry activities.
To make it as convenient as possible to volunteer, all lesson plans will be provided ahead of time and any lesson materials will be prepared before you arrive on Sunday morning.
Youth Group volunteers are needed each Sunday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to help facilitate a time for upper elementary (3rd-5th grade), middle and high school students alongside Mr. Ken.
Volunteers are also needed to provide supper for the Youth Group.
At Second, we value the impact our young people have within our congregation and community. Thank you for volunteering to help make these opportunities for spiritual development, faith formation, and study possible. Please contact our Director of Children and Youth, Ken Carrington at ce@2ndpc.org for more information.

FORGIVE FOR GOOD
For only $21.00!
At first glance, everything about the Dr. Fred Luskin's book reeks of late night infomercial!
The colors that were chosen for the cover - red, white, and blue (you had to give it some attention or you're less than patriotic!)
"For-give-for-Good" has an alliterative cadence that makes for comfortable huckster promotion.
The secondary line of the title – "A PROVEN Prescription for Health and
Happiness" reveals the same merchandising approach that one finds in weight-loss products; it tells you that you need not worry, this product has been tested, approved, certified, and is guaranteed to deliver what it promises – or so is the implication.
Even the author's name at the bottom of the front cover supports the mass marketing to the plebescite – his name is FRED – not Ungaro, Vladmir, or Jude – don't you want to trust good ol' FRED?
These may very well be cheap shots, but I dare say they are salvos that have crossed the bow of more than few theologians, psychologists, or other professional folk who felt that they had or should have a lock on such territory that is at the core of where so many of us reside – the holes we've dug, decorated and taken out long term leases on of resentment, fright, revenge and recrimination.

Dear Friends in Christ –
The Apostle Paul starts off the fourth chapter of his letter to the church at Ephesus exhorting the Ephesians to "live a life worthy of their calling.” Beginning at the 25th verse he lays out how.
This Sunday we revisit three statements from a dish towel-- I was inspired so many years ago by a housewarming gift I found for a friend at the beach. Those three statements will help us navigate these perilous times with humor and grace holding each other and the banner of Jesus.
See you in worship –
(I’m so happy to be home!)

Rev. Brad Gustafson was born and raised in a rural, tightly knit Swedish religious farming community in south central Nebraska. A church-related junior college opportunity 2,000 miles away after high school, just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, introduced him to a larger social and theological world, and his journey into that world has never ended. Following that degree, he completed his undergraduate education with a B.A. in English, Journalism and Business at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in his home state. In mid-life (he hopes it was mid-life!), Brad married a woman named Sally from the Isle of Palms, and then completed graduate studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He subsequently pastored two beloved congregations, one in Southern California and one in western Nebraska.
Rev. Gustafson preached with us in June and we're glad to have him back as our guest minister this Sunday.
Pastor Cress will be back to preaching next Sunday.
