SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 16, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

During my time away I’ve had the chance to watch a production of The Chosen. I’ll tell you more on Sunday, but just know, it’s not your typical ‘bathrobe epic’, cheaply produced, over-wrought biblical drama.

The impact of the settings and the casting of folks who could plausibly have lived with and followed an itinerant small town rabbi who speaks with such understated power, has fired my mind.

I’m so glad to be with you this Sunday a little more than halfway through my process in Baltimore.

It’s going to be a banner day to mark a new chapter in our time together + ice cream!

In great anticipation –

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 9, 2023

This Sunday we welcome guest preacher Bill Jewell.

In 2020 Bill relocated to Summerville with his wife Wendy after 25 years in Louisville, KY raising their two daughters. He is a Staff Chaplain at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and member of Second Presbyterian. Bill completed his undergraduate degree at Purdue University, a certificate in Youth Ministry and Theology at Princeton Seminary and a Masters of Religion from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to arriving in Charleston, he served for 25 years in professional youth ministry, 15 years in juvenile justice ministries and as director of family services and outreach.

This Sunday is a Gospel Sunday, featuring vocalist Grace Ramsey and keyboardist Victor McKelvey, and we will take up a special offering for Hands of Christ. The mission of Hands of Christ is to bring PC(USA) congregations together to meet the basic needs of children by showing them Christ’s love, helping them start the school year with uniforms and basic school supplies. Started in 2002 by Zion-Olivet and Westminster Churches, the organization has supported over 60,000 children. Second Presbyterian will once again serve as a downtown distribution point in August. Donations will go to the purchase of our responsibility this year - children’s socks and underwear.

Missions

The purpose of the Second Presbyterian Missions Committee is to provide support beyond the walls of the Church, meeting local, national and global organizations at their point of need and inviting them into a dynamic relationship with Christ. Our goal is to reach people at all ages and stages in their journey with Christ, both in the Church and with the organizations we support.

Missions work is grounded in scripture. Matthew 25:35-36 recounts: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; I needed clothes and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after me; I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

We host an annual Tea Room in conjunction with Spoleto as a fundraising event to benefit our Missions program. These Tea Room weekends bring the congregation together in service and is well attended by people from all over the lowcountry and the state.

Second Presbyterian Missions directly supports the following organizations and activities:

  • Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy: providing chaplain care in local emergencies

  • Hands of Christ: offering uniforms and school supplies to local elementary students

  • Medical Benevolence Foundation: medical missions in Haiti, Congo, etc.

  • Presbyterian Mission Agency (PCUSA) and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance: trained volunteers work with locals around the country and world to meet needs

  • Sea Island Hunger Awareness Foundation: offering food on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands

  • The Shaw Center: after school events at this City of Charleston recreation center

  • Star Gospel Mission: providing transitional housing to men in Charleston

  • Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation: giving youth opportunities to pursue their education and entrepreneurial dreams.

  • Water Mission: providing safe drinking water in many countries

  • Water Wellness Mission: building new wells on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands

  • We are especially pleased to support our missionaries, Sonia and Steve Dettweiler, who have been working in Nigeria for many years

Second Presbyterian is also a connected church, partnering with other churches in the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.) in world-wide mission. Of all the ways we come together, the Special Offerings represent the single, largest collective effort of Presbyterians to create positive impact and share God's grace and love. There are four denomination-wide special offerings. The One Great Hour of Sharing, given at Easter, goes to relieve hunger, disaster, and poverty.  The Pentecost offering supports young people by nurturing their faith, ideas, and unique gifts which they then share with the church and the world. 40% of the offering remained with our congregation to use for children and youth programs. The Peace and Global Witness offering supports ministries of reconciliation and peace. 25% was retained by the congregation to invest in the Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation. The Christmas Joy offering, celebrates the gift of church leaders, past, present, and future. Half of the offering goes to the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions, giving critical financial assistance for current and retired Presbyterian ministers, missionaries, and other church workers in their time of need. The other half goes to leadership development programs in Presbyterian-related schools and colleges.

Second partners with other Presbyterian churches in the state for two other special offerings. On Mothers' Day we remember Presbyterian Communities residents in need. More information at prescommunities.org. What used to be called Thornwell Home for Children, which took in orphans and other children whose families were unable to care for them, is now a major provider in state-wide service to families in crisis, offering counseling and parenting training, as well as their residential and foster programs.

In 2015, Second Presbyterian became the downtown distribution center for Hands of Christ, whose mission is to bring Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations together to meet the basic needs of children showing them Christ’s love. In 2019, we hosted our 5th Hands of Christ distribution and were delighted to serve the 60,000th Hands of Christ shopper in our Fellowship Hall! Please consider volunteering next time during this meaningful and rewarding activity.

Please join us as we extend God’s reach beyond the walls of Second Presbyterian. Thank you for your support!

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 18, 2023

Rev. Brad Gustafson was born and raised in a rural, tightly knit Swedish religious farming community in south central Nebraska. A church-related junior college opportunity 2,000 miles away after high school, just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, introduced him to a larger social and theological world, and his journey into that world has never ended. Following that degree, he completed his undergraduate education with a B.A. in English, Journalism and Business at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in his home state. In mid-life (he hopes it was mid-life!), Brad married a woman named Sally from the Isle of Palms, and then completed graduate studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He subsequently pastored two beloved congregations, one in Southern California and one in western Nebraska.

Love is a Decision

Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m.

Find upcoming events and announcements here.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, June 11, 2023

Dear Friends in Christ –

There was a time that I would suggest a phrase, something that I’d encountered in my reading or research that related to the theme of the day or what was happening in the life of the congregation.  It seemed that so many of the phrases were attributable to the Greek philosopher, Plutarch, that Julia Harlow suggested we start referring to the quotation itself, regardless of author, as “the Plutarch”.

I offer a Plutarch this week that is attributable to a writer and church consultant, Tom Ehrich.

“We discover what it means to love Jesus by having the courage to love others. And then we receive God's love and learn more about Jesus. The cycle starts in a decision to love, not in a need to get.“

It may be foreign to us or counter-intuitive to imagine that love is a decision. We’re so used to the idea of falling in love or the premise that love is something we find or that happens to us. But I propose that the great gift Jesus gave to those who followed him is that he showed what it means, what it looks like, to love -- to offer love.

This Sunday we will engage again the gospel of John, chapter 14:15-21. We will encounter the incomparable and inexhaustible love of Jesus offered through prayer, proclamation, and God’s Spirit.

What a way to start the summer! Invite everyone you know. Why wouldn’t you?

Also, I will be away much of the summer, but back to preach July 16 as we ‘re-up’ in happy response to God’s call and God’s claim on our lives. You’ll find here in the Snapshot the roster of dynamic pulpit guests.

Best love in Jesus –

Pray for MBF after Massive Flash Floods

Extensive Storm Causes Massive Flash Flood in Léogâne Haiti

Hôpital St. Croix (Holy Cross Hospital) flooded with 4 – 6 feet of water

Today, I wanted to share with you some difficult news about our partners in Haiti, as I know you have a heart for our ministry there.

In the very early hours of Saturday morning, a gigantic storm in the mountains of western Haiti caused a massive flash flood. When a nearby river overflowed its banks, it engulfed the city of Léogâne and our partner Hôpital St. Croix (HSC). The entire city flooded, the waters reaching nearly 8 feet in some areas. Most residents barely had time to climb to their roofs for safety and most have lost all their possessions.

At HSC, emergency protocols were activated to protect and care for the patients: the night nursing staff evacuated the patients and the neonatal nursery to the hallways of the second floor of the hospital, which is typically used as a guest house for visiting doctors and teams.

All of the patient care areas, diagnostic services and administration offices located on the main floor of the hospital received 4 – 6 feet of water. The pharmacy, lab, OR, radiology, neonatal nursery, OB, and patient wards were flooded with mud, and most supplies and equipment are a total loss.

While many were killed in the flooding, no one on the staff of HSC was killed or injured. We praise God for this miracle.

HSC and Léogâne need your prayers.

  • Pray for the patients who have been evacuated to the second floor. Understandably, they were traumatized and there is a higher risk for the spread of infection since the patients are in very close proximity. Pray too for the neonatal patients who are most at risk.

  • Pray for the staff of HSC who are working through this tragedy. As cleanup at the hospital begins, many are also dealing with a complete loss of their own home and belongings. Pray for God’s strength and provision.

  • Pray that God will provide for HSC. Thousands of dollars’ worth of supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals were lost in the sudden flooding.

  • Pray that God will provide food and water to the people of Léogâne. At a time when basic essentials are already hard to find and inflation has driven up prices, the flood has further complicated the supply of food and water.

Despite this recent natural disaster (which was followed on Tuesday by a nearby 4.7 magnitude earthquake), our partners at HSC continue to heal the sick and share the Gospel. Keep them in your prayers as they continue the cleanup and assess the damage caused by this flash flood. You can see video of the flood as it was occurring and the subsequent cleanup on our website. As HSC begins itemizing needs, we will also include information on ways you can help.

We will keep you informed of developments in the coming days and weeks. Thank you for your heart for Haiti.

Blessings,

Christopher Petkovich

Director of Partner Engagement for the Southeast Region
