SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, August 14, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

You think you have issues? Luke’s Jesus seems to have tired of the sweet talk. He’s just told his disciples the importance of watchfulness and now he let’s fly.

  • He’s come bringing fire. Fire has many meanings in the Bible – the presence of God, judgement, and/or purification.

  • He speaks of baptism – baptism of fire foretold by John, this time not of the world, but the baptism one he will bear to establish a new order for creation. This new order won’t be welcomed by those invested in their own accomplishments and accoutrements.

  • Jesus brings division. Isn’t he called the Prince of Peace? Yes, but not the Prince of Accommodation. The division he brings will produce a cleansing of creation, but not without disrupting even the most intimate of places – the family.

History is written in the rear view. Our task is to speak and embody God’s truth forward – together. What we get to do!

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, August 7, 2022

She looked up at me and stated, “I am trying to keep the faith.” For her, it was not some frivolous or dismissive phrase but rather an anchor to cling to in the midst of wild uncertainty. A hope that kept her going, a belief that even in the heart of the chaos, the fear, and the anxiety, God was still with her, would not leave her, and would guide her through.

Our scripture for Sunday comes from Hebrews and it is rich in encouragement to keep the faith even when we might not see the things hoped for come to fruition in our lifetime, even when the going gets rough or things seem impossible.

Friends, as we gather together let us try and keep the faith, keep on hoping, and keep our hearts open to the movements of God who is truly in our midst.

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 31, 2022

Mark chapter 5 has some important characters. As we look on Sunday at the synagogue leader, the bleeding woman, the crowd, the disciples, and Jesus, you will see they all have unique differences- and unique similarities. The goal out of the message, is for us to see what character we relate to the most and then reflect on how Jesus relates to us. Can't wait to see you!

Abraham has just been told what the future has in store for him… now he has to deal with the prospects of what is about to happen to Sodom and Gomorrah.

How does Abraham approach this "discussion" with God?

What can we learn from this encounter?

Update on the Graveyard Wall

Dear Friends in Christ –

"As its last order of business City Council approved the settlement (11-0 with one abstention)."

This refers to a settlement between the City and our business neighbor The Dewberry Hotel and it's owner John Dewberry. The particulars you may have read in numerous Post and Courier articles, but with this agreement the City, The Dewberry and Second Presbyterian Church will move forward with the restoration of the failing graveyard wall on Charlotte Street. A long time coming! Remember, we don’t quit!

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 10, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

The Fantasticks is a musical allegory about the romance of a young couple, Matt and Luisa. Their relationship is complicated by their meddling fathers. The fathers come together to commiserate when their plans don’t work out; they sing "Plant a Radish." The lyrics go, "Plant a radish, Get a radish. Never any doubt. That’s why I love vegetables you know what you’re about!"

Paul says the same – you reap what you sow. The fathers in the musical continue, "...but with children, it’s bewilderin’." The Apostle Paul’s statement in our text ain’t bewilderin’ – it’s absolutely clear: Good news if you sow the gifts of the Spirit. Remember love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity and faithfulness?

Paul encourages the people and us. He reminds them a life shared reflecting these gifts has a consequence – a harvest of a life lived in the Spirit of the living God. You reap what you sow, if you don’t quit.

Folks, we don’t quit! Our task and our privilege is to live in the Spirit of the living God – together. It’s what we get to do if we’re willing.

Let’s gather on site or online in anticipation –

SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, July 3, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ –

Paul writes to the Galatians: I’m astonished! How are you so fickle, you foolish Galatians? Folks have arrived in the area saying they have to be circumcised, observe Jewish Holy days, perhaps dietary laws. Operative word "laws." Paul reminds them that they are to live by and in God’s grace. Live in the freedom of God’s spirit.

Good message for these days as we contemplate what freedom means in these polarized and seemingly graceless times.

Let’s come to the table – Christ’s table of welcome. Let’s savor the gift that we get to share.

In anticipation –
