SERMON SNAPSHOT: Sunday, January 1, 2023
Dear Friends in Christ –
Whenever I get to preach on the first Sunday of the year I default to Janus, whom the ancient Romans worshiped as the god of gates and doors, beginnings and endings. Janus was worshiped at the planting, the beginning of the harvest time, at birth, and at marriage. Janus was thought to keep the gate of heaven.
He represented transition between primitive life and civilization, between the countryside and the city, peace and war, and the growing-up of young people. He is portrayed as having a double-faced head, each face looking in an opposite direction.
So here at the beginning of this new year 2023, we too find ourselves looking in opposite directions, reflecting on the past year and poised for what’s next.
The text as we start this new year is from Luke. Jesus on his way to Jerusalem lays it out for his disciples, the crowds, and us. No better way to jump in to 2023 than a clear word from scripture and communion.
In great anticipation –
